Chapter twenty-nine

It took us twenty minutes to walk to the top of the ridge. It probably should have taken half that, but I’d had to stop every other minute to pull slivers out of my thighs.

“Ow,” I whispered and crouched down next to Kane. I found yet another tiny stick embedded in my skin, plucked it out, and flicked it at him. “No more ladling.”

We kept our heads low as he swept his big sausage finger in front of us. “Three curved buildings. This is where they keep the monsters we saw.”

“How they hell did they get those buildings up here?”

Kane pointed to our left, where a winding dirt road cut through some trees, heading to the other side of the rise. I nodded and motioned to the two vehicles, which were just like he’d said, vans with green-and-white stripes.

“Good memory,” I said. “Those look like transports.”

“For the abominations they create in those curved buildings.” He grunted. “Why are there trees up here but not down side of mountain?”

He was right. A tiny, lush forest surrounded the hangars. A lot of saplings and more mature trees populated it but nothing as massive as a redwood.

“It’s pretty good cover, but I can’t imagine Covenant transported them up here,” I said. “It looks like the mountaintop blew off eons ago, and they grew sometime after that.”

Kane tapped the side of his head. “You are very smart.”

“Duh,” I said and rolled my eyes. “But, I mean, why do you think I’m very smart? Just to see if we’re on the same page here.”

“Volcanic soil. Very rich and fertile for trees,” he said, nodding. “This I learned from a documentary show with an old, pasty English man who loves animals very much.”

I chuckled. “Which is why you liked him, yeah?”

“Of course. We like those who favor us.”

“Not always. You’ve never been in a dive bar at three a.m,” I said. “Too much favoring.”

I twisted away from the ridge to pull out another splinter and caught a glimpse of the sky. I saw the first hint of a star winking out from the heavens.

“Oh shit,” I said and sat up quickly, handing him the bundle I’d taken from my backpack. “Here, put this stuff on.”

“What is this?”

“I got it from that street market. It’s covering, man,” I said and shoved the clothes at him. “Get, you know, covered.”

Kane already had jeans and a jean jacket on, but I wasn’t taking any chances. Grumbling, he slipped on the black sweatpants and turtleneck. I’d gotten the biggest size I could find, and it still looked like he was going to burst out of the stuff.

“Is scratchy.”

“You’re gonna be scratchy if there’s any hint of a moon tonight,” I said and pulled out my phone. “That said, I think you might be in the clear. No moon.”

His eyes got big. “No moon? Where would it go?”

As he slipped on the black ski mask and gloves, I pointed my phone screen at him, which showed a shaded-out circle. At the bottom of the screen, it had the date with the words New Moon.
